Nigerian Senate Asked To Regulate Bleaching Creams

The Nigerian Association of
Dermatologists has made plans to meet
lawmakers at the National Assembly to
propose laws that will regulate the
manufacture and use of bleaching creams
in Nigeria.




The Chairman of Abuja Dermatology
Society,
Dr. Mohammed Danmallam revealed this
recently.




According to Danmallam, the association is
working closely with other African
countries to get data to encourage the
lawmakers to accede to their request.




The dermatologist said, the compound,
hydroquinone, is the chemical used in
producing the creams.




He said the compound is heavily regulated
in the United States but banned in Europe.



The chairman further said there was no
difference between skin toning and
bleaching as they both make the skin
susceptible to infection.




He explained that when people bleach,
they kill off matured cells and leave baby
cells at the top layer of the skin which are
not strong enough to protect the body
from infection especially skin cancer.
