Senate Leader Offers Free Surgery To 4,000 Vulnerable Persons

No fewer than 4,000
vulnerable persons in six local government
areas of Yobe North Senatorial District
have benefited from free eyes surgery
sponsored by Senate Leader Ahmad
Lawan.

During an inspection of the two days
treatment on Sunday in Gashua and
Nguru, Lawan said that the free eye
treatment scheme was to support the old
and less privileged persons.

“The intervention here is largely to capture
those people who have sight challenges
and who could not afford the medical cost
to regain their sights,’’ he said.

He commended the local government
councils and traditional rulers for
mobilizing people to come out for the
treatment.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports
that two teams of surgeons and other
medical staff conducted the surgery at
Gashua and Nguru.

The senator commended Gov. Ibrahim
Gaidam of Yobe for the massive
intervention and expansion of health
institutions in the state.

“The establishment of a Teaching Hospital,
renovation and expansion of general
hospitals in the state will promote
accessible and affordable healthcare
delivery to the people, ” he said.

A beneficiary, Musa Sulayman, 62, said he
lost his sight five years ago and resorted
to street begging for livelihood.

“My sincere gratitude goes to Sen. Ahmad
Lawan for sponsoring this surgery which
has restored my sight and enable me to
pursue decent means of livelihood,” he
said.

The free eye treatment intervention
included surgery, provision of drugs and
glasses for beneficiaries from Nguru,
Bade, Jakusko, Yusufari, Machina and
Karasuwa local government areas. (NAN)
