One of Nigeria’s professional coaches
plying his trade in Saudi Arabia Shade
Olalekan has said Team Nigeria currently
competing at the 16th IAAF World
Athletics Championships will learn from
how other nations had prepared for the
event.
Speaking after evaluating Nigeria’s
chances at the mundial, Olalekan said he
cannot predict podium presence for Team
Nigeria owing to poor preparation.
“I’m sorry I don’t see any podium
presence for Nigeria in London. Our
preparation don’t give any room for
comparison.
Other countries have
prepared well enough and one can see
the confidence in their athletes, therefore,
Nigeria will continue to learn from how
others do prepare for major
championships such as this and do better
next time”
He noted that some of the athletes in
Team Nigeria are making their debut at
the championship which also gives room
stage freight and more learning while
others such as Blessing Okagbare, Tosin
Oke and a few others could improve on
their current ratings.
Coach Olalekan also used the opportunity
to announce a competition he will be
sponsoring under the name of Destiny
Athletics Club on Tuesday at the Teslim
Balogun Stadium.
Coach Olalekan averred that abroad,
Nations don’t need big competitions to
discover athletes rather, mini athletics
competitions are always necessary for big
discoveries.
According to him, in Saudi Arabia where
he works, preparation for major
championships begins with mini-
competitions to prepare athletes for
bigger ones, her regretted that such
opportunities are not available for local
athletes all year round in Nigeria.
He opined that AFN need not to provide
all the competitions athletes require in a
season, but contributions through States,
Local government sportsman and a
councils, competitions will be enough to
develop and perfect the training
requirements of athletes. There would be
cash prices for athletes in Eight events
namely, 100m, 200m, 400m, long jump,
triple and two others.
This is my 10th year outside this country
and I want to leave a legacy for more
discovery of athletes.
